Dear Dolores,

Just dropping you a note to catch up with things and to wish you Merry Christmas. I can say “Merry Christmas” now because the war on Christmas that everyone was talking about last year was lost, and Christmas won! So, Merry Christmas to you and Happy Hanukkah as well. I’m all for celebrations and good wishes in any tradition.

There is so much to catch up on. Sometimes in this outrageous world things happen so fast I don’t know what to think. I mean, all of a sudden we have a war going on in the Middle East. It’s a disaster and a mess and a half. There is too much bloodshed, too much cruelty, too much killing and destruction, too much to bear. Can you imagine what it must be like to be living in the middle of it and not knowing if you or someone you love will not survive another day or even another hour?

The war didn’t have to happen. Yes, I know, that’s easy for me to say, but I have to believe that with mutual respect, good faith and understanding on all sides people could find a way to live in peace with one another. It seems as though some people don’t want that, and when the rockets and bullets and bombs start flying, it’s too late, and peace doesn’t have a chance.

Demonizing others is the stuff that wars are made of. We can’t get into a habit of demonizing everyone we disagree with.

I know you still have an open mind about next year’s election, and I am glad for that. I don’t know how the Republicans got so out of whack—present company excepted, of course. But it looks like they are going to nominate a known liar and demonizer whose only campaign idea is “retribution.”

He can’t accept that he lost in 2020, and the only way he can deal with it is to fabricate demons out of everyone who didn’t vote for him. He calls them names–Communists, Radical Left Thugs, Deranged Lunatics, Vermin. There is nothing new here. He has always made up names for the people who oppose him. This time, he’s telling his followers that the demons are coming after them too. Vote for me, he says, and I will protect you from the demons.

Honestly, Dolores, do you think I’m a Communist? Do you think I want to destroy our country?

The truth is he is running to protect only himself. He has been indicted on numerous charges, any one of which would surely have destroyed the political aspirations of any other former president. In my opinion, he should end up in jail without passing “Go.”

According to him though, it’s all fake. My theory (and I know you’re tired of hearing my theories!) is that when something is a serious threat to him, he labels it “fake.” The indictments are “fake.” The rule of law is “fake” along with the “fake” media and the “fake” election that everyone knows he lost in 2020. It’s all a big fat joke. By calling things “fake” he takes the power out of them, passes them off as weak and insignificant—and non-threatening.

I’m surprised that there aren’t more Republicans who have grown tired of his schtick. They don’t need him. There is nothing real behind the slogan “make America great again.” America has always been and will always be great without him. But now he and his collaborators are making plans to dismantle our great country even if it means “termination” (his word, not mine) of any part of the Constitution that gets in his way.

On the world stage, he has shown willing to sell us out to Putin and Kim. He has famously boasted that he would end the war in Ukraine in a day. Well, the only way that is going to happen is if he hands a big hunk of Ukraine to Uncle Volodya.

And how will he end the war in the Middle East?

In the 2020 election, about 74 million people voted for the nation’s pet rock, Lord Butternuts. He and his followers insist this was a landslide victory, even though more than 81 million people voted for Joe Biden who, in the real world, was elected President of the United States. It…
